New Years Day Shooting Leaves One Dead, and Another Injured
On January 1, 2010 at approximately 11:20 PM, Gardena Police Officers responded to a call of gunshots being fired in the 13800-block of Normandie Avenue, in the City of Gardena.
Officers arrived and found two male adult gunshot victims in the parking lot of the business complex. One of the males, later identified as Gregory Hegwood, 26 years old of Los Angeles, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another male adult victim, Patrick Whittington, 26 years old, of Gardena, suffered a single gunshot wound to the upper body and was transported to a local hospital where he is expected to survive. The initial investigation revealed that a fight broke out among partygoers attending a new years day celebration at a business located in the business complex in the 13800-block Normandie Avenue. At some point during the fight, shots rang out and the two victims were struck by gunfire. At this point, the shooting appears to be gang-related, however it is still early in the investigation. Investigators from the Gardena Police Department Detective Bureau are handling the investigation and they would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the shooting. Anyone with information relating to the shooting is urged to contact Detective Reynaga at 310-217-9607. Lieutenant Steve Prendergast, Detective Bureau Commander, 310-217-6188
